WHAT TO EXPECT
You will always be seen by a fully qualified, registered osteopath. It is understandable that some people may be nervous about visiting the osteopath. That’s why every patient is welcome to bring a friend or relative into the treatment room with them if they wish. Patients under the age of 18 will require written consent from a parent or guardian before receiving osteopathic treatment and patients under the age of 16 will need a parent or guardian to accompany them throughout the treatment process.
CASE HISTORY
Your osteopath will ask you all about your pain or discomfort. They will be particularly interested in the following: Where does it hurt? When did you first notice the problem? Does any particular activity or movement make it feel worse? Does anything make it feel better? You will then be asked about your health, both past and present and in particular any injuries or illnesses you have suffered from or any surgeries you have undergone. You will also be asked about any medications you are currently taking or have taken in the past. If you are currently taking or have previously taken any long term medication, it can be helpful if you are able to bring a list of the medication’s names and dosages.
EXAMINATION
It is important for your osteopath to see not only the area that is affected, but also other areas which may be related to or contributing to your symptoms. Therefore, you will usually be asked to dress down to your underwear. This is done in the treatment room at the start of the examination, however if you prefer, a separate changing area is available. Once you have undressed, you will be asked to perform some simple movements in order for your osteopath to identify any restrictions or pain during movement. Your osteopath will then carry out a careful and specific passive assessment, usually whilst you are lying on the treatment couch. A variety of tests may be performed in order to test the integrity of joints, muscles, nerves, blood supply and soft tissues in the affected area.
DIAGNOSIS
Having taken a detailed case history and after performing a thorough examination, your osteopath will make a diagnosis and offer a detailed explanation of what is happening and what can be done to help you. In a very small number of cases, where osteopathic treatment is not indicated, your osteopath will guide you towards the most appropriate care for you.
TREATMENT
Your treatment will be individually tailored to meet your specific needs and requirements and you will be treated with the appropriate combination of soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilisation, articulation and muscle energy techniques. Treatment is usually comfortable, however should you experience any discomfort, your osteopath will modify your treatment plan accordingly in order to minimise discomfort.
POST TREATMENT ADVICE
Osteopaths believe that effective recovery is based on both osteopathic treatment and patient self care. At The Windmill Clinic, every patient will be offered personalised advice about home rehabilitation including specific stretches and exercises, as well as advise on the prevention of further problems and a full maintenance programme.
